This one hurts really bad. See, my attitude towards guitar players comes down to this. There are MANY who rule, who are sooo good, who’s playing I LOVE. There are few who have achieved what I call “changing the course of the river”, people who’s playing CHANGED guitar playing, diverted the waters in another direction. There’s Les Paul, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and Ywngie J Malmsteen. Dime has a place in here, but these guys changed guitar forever, via technical achievements as well as playing (Les Paul) and Eddie. EVH changed the GEAR we use, the idea of what a guitar can do and SHOULD do. I was tearing guitars apart to build one GOOD one because of him. He changed amps( modded amps became a thing because of him) and he, along with Uli Jon Roth, are the reason I love whammy bars, and Eddie being the guy who led me to the Floyd Rose bar. He is and always will be, a legend. And he was such an amazing rhythm guitarist! And funky riffs galore! Man, time to crank the solo on “When push comes to shove” to me, the best solo he ever did. Gone but NEVER forgotten. First time I ever heard the first album was when my childhood best friend James Maxwell and I went to a Bonzia skate exhibition at Hilltop Mall in Richmond CA. Changed me forever and I didn’t even play guitar yet. Saw the tour for Van Halen II with @kirkhammett ( we were chatting about this today)and WHAT A FUCKING SHOW! RIP, horns up to the King

There have been many big losses in the music world but few that just stop you in your tracks, leave you speechless and basically unable to function. Similarly, very few for whom you can say – as for countless others in your field – that without this person, you might not be who you are today, for your life would look very different. Ironically I was just planning to post a new track I’ve been holed up working on that’s directly influenced by him, playing an instrument based on his (swipe to see). It doesn’t feel appropriate to post it today (it’s another humorous song a la Zappa), and the timing is eery. There so much more to say, at a total loss for words. I can’t believe I have to type this right now: RIP #eddievanhalen 😢💔
